This cookbook, while old and loose, was still in fairly decent shape. The sewing had held together and the paper was wrinkly but still flexible and strong. The textblock had come off the spine and the Index was shriveled. Once the cover is off, books tend to fall apart first in the front and in the back.
I mended the loose pages and consolidated the spine of the textblock. I built a new cover spine, salvaged what I could of the original pastedown, and cased in the book.
